Students Mentorship

 Schools and Colleges Mentorship

The greatest challenge facing our children today is lack of self-awarenessThey lack essential life skills.

Whilst education institutions emphasis on academic excellence, there is little focus on character or morality. In his book, Becoming an ‘A’ Student in Life, Mbugua Mumbi avers that ‘education without character makes one just a clever devil’. Many students, even those with great transcripts, leave high school without understanding the importance of such skills, which experts say can make life easier in college, lead to more success in the workplace and a fulfilling life.

Most employers today would rather engage a person who scores averagely on academics but demonstrates a higher level of self-awareness and a positive mindset. The success of great entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Evan Spiegel of Snapchat, Dr. Manu Chandaria of Chandaria Industries, Dr. James Mwangi of Equity Bank, Julie Gichuru and others can be attributed more to their character than academic success.

Our Mentorship Programme

Our programme focuses on complementing the learning institutions’ efforts to achieve the desired balance of support from the management, teachers, parents and students. We have structured programmes for each party which may include:

Parents’ Talks

The parable of the sower in the gospel offers useful insights into parenting. It’s important to note that all the seeds that were broadcasted were of the same quality.

The question then is, why did these seeds yield different harvests?

The primary cause of the poor yields is not where they fell, but rather who made them fall there. The truth is that the sower was ignorant, careless, irresponsible and casual in her duty. The sower should have done selective broadcasting in order to avoid the environment that would kill the potential and destiny of his seeds – the rocks, thorns and path.

Unfortunately, the sower never realized this and kept blaming the environment.

This is where parents are today. They keep blaming the environment –etc. They do not realize that they have a very active role to play in controlling the environment.

When parents feel powerless and keep blaming the environment – technology, teachers, GoK, friends, alcohol – they end up abdicating their responsibility.

We perish for lack of knowledge”. Teachers are the repository or reservoir of knowledge in this world. A teacher who doesn’t’ share this knowledge with all his heart and soul, selflessly and passionately, is truly diminishing human life. He may be worse than a suicide bomber who kills once and dies in there as well. A teacher has unlimited influence on human life.

Students’ Talks

The student is the seed – has potential for greatness. The student’s life is like an egg – can be used for short term satisfaction or long-term gain. If the egg is handled carelessly, it can easily break and be lost forever. This is where many teenagers and young adults are.

The greatness in these students can only be nurtured through self- awareness to help:

                        1. Inculcate self- responsibility – discipline, choices.

                        2. Understand the value of education as the bridge to success.

                        3. Enhance self- concept – self-love and self-acceptance.

                        4. Create a vision for the desired future – self directness through personal goals and dreams.

                        5. Instill a value system as the pillar for long term success.

                        6. Take charge of own success

Teen and Youth Challenge

The Teen and Youth Mentorship

As a child grows into a teen and young adult, many factors such as identity crisis, addiction to technology, drugs and substance abuse, inferiority complex, broken family backgrounds, sexual abuse, negative pressure and others challenge the child’s self-belief and self-confidence.

These factors result in unmanaged habits such as emotions of anger, violence, fear, depression, anxiety  as well as behavioural issues such as sexual promiscuity, pornography, unnatural sexual acts, poor academic performance, cyber and physical bullying, shaming, suicides, lack of focus and determination.  In the end, the teen or young adult goes through their entire lifetime searching for purpose and significance. Of particular concern today is the inherent dangers facing the boy child.

It takes a consultant, coach or mentor to inform, impart, influence and give such teens or young adults a unique vantage point so as to discover who they are and what their purpose is, helping them deal with their past emotional baggage, manage their emotions, relate better with self and others so that they can overcome these challenges and become the person they were destined to be.

There are many people who have been lucky to grow up in very privileged environments yet they have ended up living very unfulfilled. Others went to the best schools but never made it in life.  Yet others were bequeathed a huge inheritance by their parents or guardians which has gone down the drain.
